Cause & Effect Workshop

We chant “Releasing all harmful Karma ever created by me since of old….” yet do not necessarily have an empowering relationship with what that might imply for the living of our lives.   This workshop will look more deeply into the question of “What does it mean to be responsible for my life…. lives of others…. even all of life?”

We live in a world eager to pin fault on some outside source.  Responsibility is regularly associated with guilt and shame.   Together we will explore an alternative view of responsibility which leaves us with power in our day-to-day living. To prompt exploration, there will be suggested assignments between sessions.

The three zoom Sessions will address:

1. The science behind how we wound up being who we think we are

2. Responsibility as an empowering possibility for day to day living

3. If "my actions are my only true belonging," where do the precepts of Zen Practice leave us?

Focusing Workshop

Focusing is a body-mind experience that provides a supportive environment for working with our Ango theme of karma. With practice, Focusing gives us a chance to see and directly experience our repetitive patterns with greater clarity and gently to move in a different direction.

Between the zoom meetings participants will have a Focusing partner with whom to practice Focusing. Instructions will be provided in the meetings and in written materials, which will be available via emails and in Discord. Seigyoku will be available throughout Ango for a Focusing session, trouble shooting and providing individual support.

Impermanence Workshop

This workshop will engage us in a contemplation of Impermanence. We will reflect on the impermanence of all things, including our own lives.  By cultivating an understanding of impermanence, we can develop a sense of urgency to use our time wisely and cultivate wisdom.

This workshop, led by Jifu and Kojin, will consist of three Zoom discussions on the impermanence of the human form and its relevance to our everyday lives. Topics will include: (1) what does it mean to appreciate impermanence in the face of a death-denying culture, (2) how do we relate to our own impermanence or other losses in our lives, and (3) with impermanence as a given, how do we want to live? This workshop will take place one Sunday each month of Ango: April, May, and June at 5:30 PM Eastern (dates to be announced) for one hour.

Encountering One Self Workshop

"You must know that when time is ready, means that there is not a single moment through the twelve hours of the day that you spend in vain. The time is ready mean the time has always and already come. If the time had come, the buddha-nature would not come. Therefore, because the time has always and already come, it is the manifestation of the buddha-nature right in front of you."  - Master Dogen, Bussho

Is the nature of reality fixed or in flux? If fixed, why is one subject to change? If in flux, where can one stand?

The Encountering One Self Workshop explores our relationship to the impermanence of time. We will meet the first Tuesday in April, May, and June starting with zazen at 7:00 PM and the workshop following from 7:45 - 8:45 PM. There will also be two opportunities for weekend stargazing for the Lyrid Meteor Shower and Venus/Jupiter. Through a meeting of art, poetry, practice, and stargazing one may glimpse the 'readiness of time.'

"When time is ready the buddha-nature reveals all by itself in front of you." - Dogen, Bussho

Optional Zazen from 7:00pm - 7:30pm

Sweeping Changes Workshop

The impermanence of the state of cleanliness and tidiness in our homes is fertile ground for putting our zazen into action. This workshop aims to inspire us to transform our mundane tasks such as folding clothes and washing dishes into moments of expansion and appreciation. We will explore how to dissolve our delusions while caring for our environments, cleaning our inner world as we clean the outer world.

On Saturday, March 25th, 9:00 - 10:00 Am we will have an online screening of Enkai's short film Dust to Light followed by a group discussion on cleaning in our lives. Enkai will also offer a brief presentation of Zen stories and resources on cleaning for inspiration.

Participants will have the opportunity to opt into a cleaning reflection buddy system where you will partner with someone for the length of Ango for regular check-ins. Partners can decide how often and by what means they will check in (weekly via text, bi-weekly via video call, etc.).

Then near the end of Ango on Sunday, June 4th after services we will have a group discussion to share our experiences. This discussion is for the benefit of the whole sangha, even if you didn't join the initial conversation or have a check-in partner.
